Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common condition where tissue of the lining of the womb (the endometrium) is found outside the womb. Common places are the ovaries, the lining of the pelvis, behind the uterus and covering the top of the vagina. Usually diagnosed between 25-40 years of age,  it is a long-term condition that causes painful/heavy periods, pain in the tummy, pelvis or lower back, as well as fertility issues. Occasionally, there are no symptoms at all.  At present, it is not possible to  completely cure endometriosis. However, its symptoms can be managed with painkillers or hormone medication. Surgery to remove patches of endometriosis tissue can sometimes be used to improve symptoms and fertility. More information
